The most widespread misunderstanding is of the difference between physical dependence and addiction. Many patients, the public and sadly healthcare professionals fear that anyone taking opioid medications on a long-term basis will become addicted.

For as long as I’ve been a nurse I have been frustrated with the attitude of many of my peers regarding patients with chronic pain. I have never understood why so many nurses feel it so crucial to pass judgment on patients who are in obvious pain.

An interesting conversation ensued during a monthly breast conference last week. As usual, the case was presented, a woman in her late 80’s, who presented with a lump in her breast and a suspicious mammogram. After the usual testing of ultrasound, MRI, CT and biopsy it was confirmed that she had breast cancer.

This week is the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS 2010) 35th annual Congress. Sadly I had to leave the rainy 50 degree weather of Chicago-land to head to sunny San Diego. Its a tough responsibility, but one I take on without complaints.

Colleen O'Leary, RN, MSN, AOCNS, is a oncology clinical nurse specialist at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, IL. She was the recipient of a Compassionate Care Award in the Cancer Program at NMH in 2006, and has helped lead a new orientation program for new nursing graduates. Colleen also initiated the Schwartz Center Rounds in the hospital, a monthly program that allows caregivers to talk about the psychosocial issues.
