While it is a rare condition and no medications have been approved for its treatment patients with neuromyelitis optica can get the help they need if doctors know what they are looking for.

Maureen A. Mealy, RN, BSN, MSCN, CNRN, from Johns Hopkins University discussed how treatment and diagnosis can be handled at the 2015 Annual Meeting of the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers. Mealy said a blood test can result in "completely shifting treatment," away from multiple sclerosis and towards the proper treatment courses for patients. She also noted there are three studies underway working to find a treatment for the condition.
