Adriana Garriga-Lopez, PhD, Kalamazoo College focuses her research on HIV/AIDS in Puerto Rico. At the 20th United States Conference on AIDS, Garriga-Lopez talked about how she and her colleagues think about the way AIDS research has taken place in marginalized communities, and commented that this research has tended to silo people into particular categories or particular communities like injecting drug users, men who have sex with men, etc. As a response, her work in Puerto Rico is to think about the political and socioeconomic context of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. For instance, Puerto Rico was not extended the Obamacare reform; it was initially included in Obamacare, and then it was rolled back.
