To say that a patient has been diagnosed with myocardial infarction may not paint the full picture of the diagnosis. Recent research has shown there is a second type of the condition which not as much is known about across the spectrum.

Hanna K. Gaggin, MD, MPH, from Massachusetts General Hospital discussed this relatively unknown condition and what can be done to make it better understood to improve treatment during the American College of Cardiology's annual meeting in Chicago. Gaggin said that since the causes of the two forms of the condition are different it can mean needing to take different approaches to treatment but there is no definitive approach to help these patients as of yet.
