As patients seek help for chronic and acute pain problems doctors and health care professionals continue to seek new treatment options beyond surgery and medication.

Some hospitals have developed special centers to treat pain patients using a variety of approaches including counseling, yoga, and other less traditional treatment methods. While Hackensack University Medical Center, now known as HackensackUMC does not currently have this on its campus, Jose A. Contreras, MD, chairman of the department of pain and palliative care said they are currently using many of these approaches while working on developing a specific center at the New Jersey location.
