Translating Scientific Advances into Practical Oncology Care
A new bridge between research and patient care
Oncology has come a long way from the days of cauterizing breast tumors and treating cancers with pig ear-and-barley compounds, as described in the “Edwin Smith” and “George Ebers” papyri, two scrolls documenting ancient Egyptian medical practices. Today we can identify neoplasms before they become visible to the naked eye, and treatments target cancer on a molecular level. This progress is the culmination of more than 100 years of intensive research into the causes and treatment of cancer.
A steady stream of scientific study has produced a flood of information on new technologies for preventing, diagnosing, and treating cancer that can be challenging for a busy physician to wade through. The extent to which patients benefit from these scientific advances in oncology depends on getting the word out to those practitioners at the helm of patient care: community-based oncologists.
I am therefore delighted to present Contemporary Oncology, a new peer-reviewed clinical journal for practicing oncologists. Every issue offers readers a range of in-depth articles on cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Contemporary Oncology includes clinical review articles from the world’s leading cancer programs, highlights from recent global oncology studies, and fresh reports on the latest clinical trials. We address every prevalent tumor type—prostate, breast, lung, colorectal, bladder—and even a few less prevalent ones, as well as hematological malignancies such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. Always with an emphasis on practicality, our articles bolster clinicians’ efforts to provide patients with the best care possible.
At Contemporary Oncology, we recognize that effective communication is a critical component of patient care and lays the foundation for a trusting doctor-patient relationship. Some patients with cancer make the toughest decisions of their lives with the guidance of their oncologist. For others, that first visit to the oncologist marks the start of a relationship that may last a decade or more—longer than some marriages!— thanks to major improvements in long-term survival rates. Contemporary Oncology has departments dedicated to addressing issues from the patient’s perspective, discussing cancer patients’ concerns, and recommending ways oncologists might address them. We also provide handouts that oncologists and the care team can share with their patients.
Contemporary Oncology comes to you from Intellisphere, a leading medical publisher in New Jersey dedicated to educating medical professionals and improving patient care around the globe. Other Intellisphere publications include Oncology Net Guide, Oncology & Biotech News, Pharmacy Times, The American Journal of Managed Care, and Cardiology Review. We hope you enjoy this new addition to the Intellisphere library.
