Walmart, famed offeror of the Blue Light Special, apparently is not hip to the Green Light Special. Last November, a Michigan Walmart fired a man when he tested positive for marijuana in a routine drug test following a workplace injury. The catch: the man possesses a physician-prescribed medical marijuana card for sinus cancer and a brain tumor. Michigan is one of 14 states with legalized medical marijuana; however, employers retain the right to terminate any employees who fail drug tests. Walmart maintains the decision reflects its concern for the overall safety of its associates and customers. The story is a cautionary tale for patients with cancer considering marijuana among their various treatment options.
