Examining the growing independence of nurses under a microscope.

With doctors gravitating towards high-paying specialties and the shortage of medical personnel growing, will the nurse practitioner (NP) or physicians assistant (PA) replace the primary care physician in the future? In some states, nurse practitioners can already open independent clinics where they diagnose and treat patients, and write prescriptions. Like it or not, this controversial practice could spell the answer to many of our burgeoning healthcare issues.

Where to HMO have a role. Will they have an advantage over other Group practices.
