Endocrine Case Report: Ear Pain in Diabetes

Our latest endocrine case report from Brady Pregerson, MD, features a patient in their mid-70s with a history of diabetes mellitus and end-stage kidney disease presenting with 6 days of gradually worsening right ear pain. Can you determine the correct diagnosis?

History of Present Illness:

A patient in their mid-70’s with a history of diabetes mellitus and end-stage kidney disease presents to the hospital with 6 days of gradually worsening right ear pain. They deny URI, fever, facial weakness or other complaints and have not had an ear infection since childhood.

Vital Signs & Physical Exam:

Vital signs are normal except for temp of 99.2 and a softish blood pressure. The physical exam is normal except for evidence of right otitis externa.
