Americans Plan to Get Away in 2012

Article

Americans are planning some big vacations for 2012. More than a quarter of respondents in a TripAdvisor survey plan to take five or more leisure trips.

Nearly a third of U.S. travelers are going to increase how much they spend on leisure travel in 2012, according to a survey by TripAdvisor. A further 49% expect to spend the same amount as in 2011.

When it comes to leisure travel, Americans won’t be sparing any expenses: 21% of respondents expect to spend $10,000 or more on travel next year. And one trip isn’t enough. A whopping 91% of respondents are planning to take two or more trips in 2012, and a quarter are planning five or more.

"Sun and sand remain an enduringly popular choice, but the coming year will also see a renewed interest in cultural trips, as Americans seek to combine precious downtime with enriching experiences," said Karen Drake, senior director of communications for TripAdvisor, in a statement.

Beaches are the top choice for travelers, with 44%, however cultural trips to museums or historic sites was a close second with 42%, which is more than the 38% in 2011. Less popular in 2012 are amusement/theme park trips, with only 12% of respondents, down from 14% this year.

Americans are also expected to be globetrotters, with 68% planning to travel outside of the U.S. Of those, 54% will visit Europe, 52% expect to visit another country in North America and 12% have plans to travel to Asia.

"U.S. travelers will be spreading their wings far and wide in 2012," Drake said. Paris, London and Rome are the top international cities for U.S. travelers.

Furthermore, lodgings are going through some changes. Although hotels and staying with friends or family will still be the most common options, their popularity is on the decline. In 2012, 83% will stay in hotels, down from 87% in 2011. However, vacation rentals, B&Bs/inns and all-inclusive resorts should make modest gains next year over this year.
