In previous generations post traumatic stress disorder was either not diagnosed or not acknowledged. While there is still some resistance to treatment many veterans are now receiving the kind of help that may not have been available to those who served before them.

In previous generations post traumatic stress disorder was either not diagnosed or not acknowledged. While there is still some resistance to treatment many veterans are now receiving the kind of help that may not have been available to those who served before them.

Mayer Bellehsen, PhD, Director of the Mildred and Frank Feinberg Division of the Unified Behavioral Health Center for Military Veterans and their Families noted that before the 1980's there had been no official diagnosis of post traumatic stress disorder. In the more than 30 years since a considerable effort has been made to find the most effective treatments for these men and women. He also said as the treatment has progressed the effort has extended beyond the veterans to their family members as well.
