When many people think of palliative care they assume it is meant to be done in the later stages of a person's illness. However, there is a push to show that it can be of benefit to patients much earlier and for longer periods of time.

Jose A. Contreras discussed how this change in the field has come about and what it has meant for improving outcomes in patient care overall during a recent interview with MD Magazine. One area of focus, according to Contreras is to get nurses the specialized training they need to help this unique patient population.
