Most and Least Expensive Cars to Insure

Article

Usually, the top concerns among car buyers are safety or fuel economy or design. Very few people consider insurance costs despite the fact that they can cost thousands of dollars a year more.

The last time you bought a car what choices factored in to your decision? Usually, the top concerns among car buyers are safety or fuel economy or design. How about insurance costs?

Traditionally, minivans have the best insurance rates, but that’s no longer the case. According to Insure.com, among 2013 car models, crossovers and SUVs are the least expensive cars to insure.

Mercedes-Benz cars are overwhelmingly the most expensive to insure, with 11 of the top 20 spots. And on top of having the highest national average car insurance rates, the Mercedes-Benz CL600 costs about $160,000 just to buy.

However, these lists only take in the national average. State-specific rates show a different story.

“When we look at state-specific auto insurance rates, we see that insuring an Audi R8 5.2 Quattro in Washington, D.C., costs an average of $6,009,” according to Insure.com.

In order to determine the most and least expensive cars to insure, averages were calculated using data from Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, Nationwide, Progressive and State Farm in 10 ZIP codes for state. The averages were based on insurance for a single, 40-year-old male commuting 12 miles to work every day with a clean record and good credit.
