The Most Expensive Cities in the World

The cost of living for New Yorkers is nothing compared to the cities named the most expensive in the world. Here are the top 10, plus a look at the average prices for certain everyday items.

The two most expensive cities in the world both reside on the same small island, according to the Worldwide Cost of Living report for 2013.

The report by The Economist Intelligence Unit revealed that Tokyo is once again the world’s most expensive city. In the last two decades, Tokyo has taken the top spot in all but six years. Meanwhile, last year’s number one — Zurich — fell six spots.

The report uses New York City as a base and compares the cost of living in other cities around the world. Since NYC is the base, only 12 cities of 131 actually saw a relative rise in the cost of living because of a stronger U.S. dollar and rising costs in NYC, according to the report.
