For patients who may be at risk of contracting HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) could be a way to minimize their risk of becoming ill themselves. However many patients either believe they are not at risk or do not know about the treatment option.

Working in the Bronx, which has among the highest infection rates in New York City, Uriel R. Felsen, MD, from Montefiore Health System said if more people knew about and took advantage of PrEP it could help to further reduce the number of people affected by the virus who might not have otherwise.
