House Call: The COVID-19 Effect

Article

How coronavirus spread has affected a New York institution's invasive cardiology department.

The effect of the coronavirus (COVID-19)—to the health system, the economy, and the everyday lives of Americans—is unprecedented to any modern disease outbreak.

And yet doubly so, healthcare providers are at work.

While the federal and public health guidance is widely uniform in direction and goal, circumstances caused by the virus are greatly unique to the individual. Gilbert Tang, MD, is undergoing a particularly unique experience a New York-based interventional cardiologist and an expecting father.

In a special edition House Call interview with HCPLive®, Tang—Associate Professor of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Surgical Director of the Structural Heart Program for the Mount Sinai Health System—described what COVID-19 has meant for his day-to-day medical practices, its effect on interventional care priorities, and what the pandemic issue looks like in the country’s most populated city.
