Hyperkalemia can be a significant diagnosis for patients and finding the right treatment can have a great impact on their quality of life. New medications could help in their daily care.

Akinlolu Ojo, MD, PhD, MBA, from the University of Michigan, discussed some of these new medications during the American College of Physicians Internal Medicine Meeting in Boston. Ojo said these new medications are considerably more effective at reducing potassium in a patient's blood which can help with their overall health. High levels of potassium can present a number of problems for patients if not properally addressed according to Ojo.
