In the past surgery for the treatment of epilepsy involved a complicated craniotomy procedure. Now, thanks to laser technology some of the most severe patients can get relief from their symptoms and be on their way home the next day.

MD Magazine spoke with Jorge Gonzalez-Martinez, MD, PhD from Cleveland Clinic about the procedure and how it has changed the face of treatment for the condition.

Epilepsy can be a debilitating disease for patients with the condition. Seeing them go from an endless stream of seizures to being seizure free can be a relief not only for doctors but everyone associated with the patients.

Now that craniotomy is no longer the only surgical procedure for patients with epilepsy doctors and patients can see hope of positive treatment results whether through medicine or surgery. While there are new procedures coming, some options may not be viable for all patients.
