There have been demonstrated benefits to implementing antimicrobial stewardship programs in medical facilities of all sizes. While they have become more popular, there are several factors that need to be considered before making that move.

Robert A. Weinstein, MD, from Rush University discussed some of these factors during the American College of Physicians Internal Medicine meeting in Boston. One of the main considerations is cost though in the long run he said they help reduce costs for the facilities. He said it also helps physicians to better treat their patients if the guidelines are "spelled out," for them.
