In many ways, the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and influenza have been linked to one another since the first outbreaks last year; their both being contagious respiratory infections with overlapping primary symptoms has led to sometimes false interpretations of actual characteristics and risks associated with COVID-19.

During this flu season—a period which experts stressed beforehand would be vital to reduce overlapping virus spreads, and the public responded to with lessened concern—understanding the true disparities between the respiratory viruses is vital, as the pandemic continues to overwhelm the US healthcare system.
