When people think of issues affecting the tonsils most think about children having their tonsils out. For those who did not have the procedure in their youth, there may be more problems waiting for them down the road.

Maruits S. Boon, MD, from Thomas Jefferson University Hospital discussed some of these issues during the American College of Physicians Internal Medicine Meeting in Boston. Boon said adult patients can experience sore throats, can have their sleep affected and also develop abcesses later in life. One other misconception Boon pointed out is that tonsilectomy is "basically the same," for patients of all ages.
