America has had a history of people avoiding financial discussions regarding health care, but we now need to start finding the resources to help have those conversations, according to Joe Fifer, CPA, the president and chief executive officer of the Healthcare Financial Management Association.

“It’s almost impossible for physicians to understand the complexity of all the rules and regulations and resources available and all the different coverages; but perhaps the way to start is just to do that: to start,” Fifer said.

Thankfully, though, there’s a change happening in the country’s medical education so that costs of care are being addressed, according to Neel Shah, MD, MPP, an instructor at Harvard Medical School and the founder of the non-profit Costs of Care.
