Q&A With Pavan Bhargava of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine: Studying the Microbiome in Treatment of Multiple Sclerosis

As more is learned about the gut microbiome researchers are finding new ways to apply it to other fields of medicine. A recent study looked at how it can affect multiple sclerosis and what role it can have in future treatment options.

Pavan Bhargava, MD, from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine discussed research on the topic during the 2015 Annual Meeting of the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers in Indianapolis. Bhargava said the study involves the study of autoimmunity and has shown promising results in early animal trials. While admitting that the role in multiple sclerosis is "still being defined, looking at experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis can give a sense of the connection to those looking for work in human studies as well.
