A real-world study from Spain suggests baricitinib demonstrated favorable effectiveness, adherence, and safety in rheumatoid arthritis, but investigators caution more research is needed.
Signaling Molecules May Limit Bone Destruction and Bone Loss from RA
September 29th 2009Researchers have discovered a new way to use the role of signaling molecules to inhibit another complex that plays a key role in the ‘turning on’ of genes “that cause the stem cell precursors of osteoclasts to mature and start eating bone,” a discovery that may lead to the formation of new rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis drugs.
Stress in the Workplace may Decrease an Individual's Risk for Developing Rheumatoid Arthritis
September 10th 2009Psychosocial work stress has been previously associated with an increased risk for cardiovascular disease. New research now reveals that high work stress may actually decrease an individual's chance of developing inflammatory conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis.
Computer-aided diagnosis and Z-scores may lead to earlier RA intervention
June 6th 2009Clinical use of computer-aided joint-space analysis (CAJSA) provides a reliable calculation of joint-space distances (JSD) at the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint for quantification of joint changes related to rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Calculation of a Z-score helps distinguish disease-related narrowing of JSD from age-related changes.
RA response criteria help decisions about continuing TNF inhibitors
May 4th 2009The key predictors for continuation of anti–tumor necrosis factor a treatment in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are response and achievement of a state of low disease activity. Responses seen after 6 weeks and, significantly, after 3 months help decision making.
Lupus symptoms overlap with RA, increase mortality
March 29th 2009The features of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are common in the lifetime course of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and are significantly associated with an increased mortality risk, even after adjusting for well-described RA-specific predictors of mortality. For some SLE features, the increased risk may be as high as 6-fold.
Patient assessment provides effective RA measure
March 20th 2009A measure based on patient data provides a reasonable definition of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) outcome and RA treatment success or nonsuccess. Among patient-reported variables, patient global at a level of 1.25 or lower best separates patients who are very satisfied with their health from those not very satisfied, regardless of the presence of comorbidity.
Cutaneous amyloidosis with Sjögren syndrome a distinct disease entity?
July 20th 2008Meijer JM, Schonland SO, Palladini G, et al, University of Groningen, Groningen, theNetherlands, and other centers. Sjogren's syndrome and localized nodular cutaneousamyloidosis: coincidence or a distinct clinical entity? Arthritis Rheum. 2008;58:1992-1999.
High Birth Weight Leads to Rheumatoid Arthritis in Adulthood
July 3rd 2008The fetal environment potentially preprograms the brain or endocrine system to be maladapted later in life and that patients with rheumatoid arthritis are known for having a dysregulated HPA axis, which may be affected in utero.
Injection of the wrist and ulnar styloid
March 28th 2008The wrist, a complex joint, often is involved in inflammatoryarthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis or psoriatic arthritis. Wristsynovitis causes pain, swelling, and loss of extension. Extension of thesynovial lining may lead to synovitis of the ulnar styloid. During injectionof the ulnocarpal joint, the lidocaine and corticosteroid mixtureshould flow without resistance. Injecting air after corticosteroidinjection of the ulnar styloid creates a seal that prevents the corticosteroidfrom leaking up the needle tract into the dermal layer and creatingunsightly depigmentation.
