Chemical injuries from rail events—Each year, about 1.8 millioncarloads of hazardous substances are transported on US railroads.During 2002-2006, 78 rail events resulted in 144 injuries. Mostof the events (81%) occurred within 0.25 mile of residences, andmost of the injuries (70%) involved the general public.
