Complexities of Choosing COPD Treatment

This Peer Exchange is moderated by Peter Salgo, MD, professor of medicine and anesthesiology at Columbia University and an associate director of surgical intensive care at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City.

With so many pharmacotherapeutic options to treat COPD, making treatment decisions can be daunting. Complicating it further, there are multiple phenotypes of COPD, leading to heterogeneity across patients, as well as variable severity.

Polypharmacy might be warranted, said Hanania, because it can involve vocal constriction and bronchospasm, but also inflammation.
