While many patients with COPD get depressed because they feel they are to blame for their disease because of smoking, there are other risk factors at play. Make explained that COPD develops due to environmental exposure — not only to cigarette smoke but also to things like biomass fuel – and a genetic predisposition. Childhood pneumonia is also a predictor of later COPD, as well as the asthma COPD overlap syndrome, or ACOS.
