In the struggle against the growing opioid epidemic the CDC recently announced new guidelines aimed at helping guide doctors on when to prescribe this form of medication and what other steps can be done to help patients.

Looking to reverse a trend that dates back more than a decade David R. Walega, MD, from Northwestern Medicine discussed the changes in the guidelines and what it can mean to help keep opioids out of the hands of people who could potentially abuse the medication. Walega said it is important to ensure the safety of opioids not only for patients who are prescribed the drugs but also the people around them who could potentially abuse them without a proper prescription.
