Article

Days after another couple of mass shooting tragedies, a team of psychiatry thought leaders discuss the public's understanding of mental health care.

This week’s #DocTalk Tweet Chat will feature a roundtable of co-hosts leading discussion on “Mental Health Stigma”—a topic which has again reached national policy rhetoric days after the tragic mass shootings in Dayton, OH, and El Paso, TX.

#DocTalk is a weekly conversation featured on Twitter that focuses on the biggest issues in healthcare today. Join us on Tuesday night, August 6, at 9 PM EST for the start of our chat, featuring the following cohosts:

  • Jessi Gold, MD, MS; Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine (@DrJessiGold)
  • Amy Barnhorst, MD; Vice Chair of Community Psychiatry, University of California Davis (@amybarnhorst)
  • Howard Liu, MD, MBA; Chair, Department of Psychiatry, University of Nebraska Medical Center (@DrHowardLiu)

The team of clinicians and thought-leaders will field perspectives and insights into the following questions:

  • How has the prevalence of mass casualty events—and their depiction by the media—influenced the public’s understanding of mental health issues?
  • How does stigma influence a patient’s perception of their own mental health?
  • What is the greatest misconception that mentally ill patients often have about their condition?
  • Where are we currently lacking in mental health care initiatives in the US?
  • What is the doctor's role in countering medical misinformation or stigma?
  • How can clinicians help improve public health legislation for mentally ill patients?

We invite all interested Twitter users to participate in the chat and contribute their own perspective and questions.
