Q&A With Kathleen Unroe From the Regenstrief Institute: Indiana Program Gives OPTIMISTIC View of Future of Nursing Homes

As part of a program run by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services centers around the country are taking a closer look at what the nursing home field could look like in the future.

Kathleen Unroe, MD, an investigator at the Regenstreif Institute and associate professor at Indiana University discussed the program and how it hopes to help patients in nursing homes not only in Indiana but across the country.

Funded by the CMS Innovation Center, Unroe said the goal is to help keep nursing home patients from being unnecessarily hospitalized. By doing this, she said it not only can improve the quality of life for the patients but also provide financial and utility benefits for the nursing homes and hospitals.
