For new mothers postpartum depression is a becoming a more common diagnosis. Recent research has shown that depression and anxiety can be a real concern before, during, and after pregnancy.

Tina Walch, MD, Medical Director at South Oaks Hospital, part of the Northwell Health system discussed this condition and how treatment has progressed during a recent interview with MD Magazine. Walch noted that as with many other aspects of mental health this field includes a spectrum of conditions ranging from the more mild to harder to treat forms of psychosis. Thanks to cultural changes in recent years Walch said there is now more awareness of these conditions which can help women get the care they need.
