The Federal Do-Not-Call Registry(www.donotcall.gov) has already loggedmore than 30 million phone numberssince its July launch date. The list, whichis scheduled to go into effect in October, won't stop all those annoying telemarketingcalls, however. Among the organizationsthat can bypass the do-not-call listare nonprofits and political parties, whichisn't all that surprising. You can stop callsfrom some nonprofit organizations byregistering your phone number on theDirect Marketing Association's mail, telephone, and e-mail preference service(www.dmaconsumer.org). A phone callto the credit bureaus' opt-out number(888-567-8688) can also block those pre-approvedcredit card offers from clutteringup your mailbox.
