Rare Disease Report Takes the #ALSPepperChallenge

Do you remember the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) Ice Bucket Challenge?

Inspired by ALS patients Anthony Senerchia and Pete Frates, the viral phenomenon encouraged people to either donate to research or dump a bucket filled with ice water on top of their heads, and is believed to have raised more than $220-million and an immeasurable amount of awareness for the rare disease.

ALS — which is commonly referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease” because of how rare it was at the time of the former New York Yankee’s diagnosis – is a classic motor neuron disease. Early symptoms include muscle weakness or stiffness, but as the disease progresses, a patient gradually loses his or her ability to move, speak, swallow, and breathe.

A new series of internet videos has been circulating recently, wherein those on camera down a hot pepper and record their reactions. The challenge is spreading quickly, and participants have included NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal, talk show host Sharon Osbourne, and Golden Globe winner Jennifer Garner.
