Paul S. Carbone, MD: Telemedicine and Autism Management

Author(s):

Telemedicine will likely continue to be used as a tool in autism management.

If anything, the circumstances of the global pandemic has shed a light on the value and need to improve autism management.

Appointments were cancelled, social events postponed, and parents were forced to work from home, leading many to struggle with managing the symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

And with that there may be some positives and better understandings of the disorder.

But telemedicine can be an improvement that is here to stay and should be an effective tool for all medical fields, especially psychiatry.

In an interview with HCPLive®, Paul S. Carbone, MD, professor of pediatrics, University of Utah, talked about some of the challenges both parents and patients faced during the ongoing pandemic and why even when the risk of the virus subsides, telemedicine could be a viable tool for clinicians and patients.

Carbone will present 2 presentations during the 2021 American Academy of Pediatrics Virtual Conference that focus on autism beyond diagnosis, specifically on managing the disease.

The session will include discussions on the current causes of autism and the appropriate medical workup, evidence-based treatments for autism, behavioral developmental interventions, complimentary alternative interventions, and how to make a practice more autism friendly.

Finally, the talk centers on the evaluation and management of co-occurring conditions.
