Jennifer Green discussed weight management and obesity during the annual Pri-Med West conference.
Many people in the US struggle with weight problems, which in turn can lead to cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
And for many, bad habits can be a major source of weight problems, including drinking, poor food choices, and a lack of exercise.
Breaking those habits can be a challenge in good times, but that challenge was amplified during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In an interview with HCPLive®, during Pri-Med West 2022 in Anaheim, Jennifer Green, MD, Professor of Medicine, Duke University, discussed how the pandemic impacted individuals differently.
Green said for some they were able to maintain and develop good habits, but the majority of people do not fall into this category.
And Green said patients should not necessarily focus on losing weight but rather ensure they are not actually gaining weight.
“A realistic goal for most of us is avoid gaining additional weight,” Green said.
Another issue during the pandemic was a loss of follow-up with doctors.
But as the threat of the virus is waning for many, Green said doctors should begin to have more follow-up with patients for a number of reasons, including weight management and diabetes management.
