Steriod-related damage builds over time for patients with childhood-onset lupus leading to cataracts, avascular necrosis, diabetes and osteoporotic fractures. Learn more in this slideshow.
Disease damage from systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is known to predict future mortality, and existing studies suggest childhood-onset lupus could be responsible for increased disease damage than the adult-onset version of the condition. However, little is currently known about adult outcomes of childhood-onset lupus, particularly steroid-related damage. A study published in Seminars in Arthritis & Rheumatism assessed steroid-related damage accumulated over time in adults with childhood-onset and adult-onset disease. This is the first known study to compare damage accrual over time in adults with childhood-onset and adult-onset SLE.In this slideshow, we highlight the findings.Source:Â Â Heshin-Bekenstein M, Trupin L, Yellin E, et al. “Longitudinal Disease- and Steroid-Related Damage Among Adults with Childhood-Onset Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.” Seminars in Arthritis & Rheumatism.
