How well your stock portfolio did in the first 3 months of this year may dependon where your stocks' companies are located. Although the overall marketbarely showed a profit for the quarter, stocks of companies in some regions didmuch better. Generally, companies west of the Mississippi easily outperformedthe market as a whole, while those in the East didn't fare as well. One exceptionwas the Pacific region, including California, Washington, Oregon, Alaska, and Hawaii, where stocks limped to a paltry 0.4% gain. Stocks in theMountain States, on the other hand, turned in a 4.5% profit for the quarterand those in the West Central States did almost as well. Stocks of New Englandcompanies were the laggards in the East, with a 1.8% gain.
