Check out this quiz on the NKF's KDOQI recommendations on nutrition in chronic kidney disease, with a focus on their guidance for micronutrient supplementation!

As with many chronic diseases, chronic kidney disease (CKD) has a significant impact on the quality of life and lifestyle choices of patients. As a result of diminished or diminishing kidney function, achieving optimal nutrition becomes a cornerstone of management for these patients, which is why the National Kidney Foundation (NKF)’s Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (KDOQI) took aim at nutrition in CKD for in its most recent guideline update published in 2020.

At 107 pages in length and citing more than 530 references, the document represents a joint effort between the NKF and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Included within the 107-page document are 6 separate guidelines addressing the following subjects: Nutritional Assessment, Medical Nutrition Therapy, Protein and Energy Intake, Nutritional Supplementation, Micronutrients, and Electrolytes. As part of our coverage of the NKF’s Spring Clinical Meeting, which is being held in Long Beach, CA from May 14-18, 2024, we are testing your knowledge of nutritional management for patients with CKD in a series of quizzes based on these guidelines.

This quiz will be focused on Guideline 4: Micronutrient Supplementation from the “KDOQI Clinical Practice Guideline for Nutrition in CKD: 2020 Update”. Of note, in the opening section of the document, the writing committee notes the guidelines were created to provide information and assist in decision-making and were not intended to define a standard of care and should not be construed as such nor should it be interpreted as prescribing an exclusive course of management.

According to the guidelines, what is the recommended approach for assessing dietary vitamin intake periodically in adults with CKD 3-5D or posttransplantation?
