The Educated Patient: Conjunctivitis

Article

Direct your patients to this site for an explanation of the causes of conjunctivitis, common symptoms of the illness, and the main goals of treatment.

Put together by the American Optometric Association, this site describes what conjunctivitis is, what causes the condition, and common symptoms. A detailed description of the tests used to diagnose conjunctivitis will help parents know what to expect during a doctor’s visit. The main goals of conjunctivitis treatment — “to increase patient comfort, to reduce or lessen the course of the infection or inflammation,” and “to prevent the spread of the infection in contagious forms of conjunctivitis” — are explained. Also within the treatment section is a description of how treatment varies depending upon the type of conjunctivitis: bacterial, viral, allergic, or chemical.
