Let’s begin with the elephant in the room.

A review of the most memorable stories in medicine to occur in 2020 could patently focus on the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Its effect on public health, academics, clinical research, healthcare infrastructure, and society overall is unmatched in the modern history of epidemics. The greatest story in medicine this year? Try the greatest story in the world.

Indeed, our coverage and insights throughout the HCPLive® Network reflects that. Go to any page, search any disease or specialty focus, watch any interview from this year. In all likelihood, the pandemic is present, one way or another. It’s been an arresting, overwhelming, inescapable topic for all of 2020.

So, a greater challenge would be to find the stories beyond the great reach of COVID-19. What happened this year that even a world-changing pandemic couldn’t overshadow? Or what stories did we miss while engrossed in this virus?

Introducing our 2020 edition of the “This Year in Medicine” series, our annual countdown of editor-picked stories on what stood out the most in our fields of coverage the last year. Over the next 4 weeks, we will be running features from our teams here at HCPLive, Contagion, and NeurologyLive.

Our only rule? COVD-19 will not be a topic.

We want to use this time to reflect on—or even return to—the stories in medicine which warrant follow-up, scrutiny, or celebration.

Be sure to check back in here throughout December to read the newest entries in the series. You can also use the banner image above to navigate back to this page, which we’ll continue to update with links to our newest entries as we near 2021.

It’s been a historical year in healthcare thus far, and not just because of one virus. Join us for a look back on all that may have been missed in This Year in Medicine.
