Improving Treatment for a 'Neglected Condition' in Pulmonary Hypertension

For many years, there were no good treatments for patients with pulmonary hypertension. That has changed recently, but there is still much more work to be done.

Stephen Y. Chan, MD, PhD, from UPMC, said that when he was in medical school, they were told about the condition, but also that there was almost nothing to offer patients aside from heart and lung transplants. With no medications and no management, non-transplant patients often were given less than three years to live. In order for pulmonary hypertension to not be as "neglected," Chan said it is important for more providers to be aware of the condition in order to assure faster diagnosis which can help treatment.
