Why Pediatric Eczema Finally Has Its Own Guidelines
Pediatric dermatologists introduce the first pediatric-specific evidence-based guidelines for atopic dermatitis and discuss.
Episodes in this series

The disease's burden extends well beyond the skin. Andrew C. Krakowski, MD, a pediatric dermatologist at St. Luke's University Health Network, and Carla Torres-Zegarra, MD, a pediatric dermatologist at Children's Hospital Colorado, University of Colorado Anschutz—who is also board certified in both pediatrics and dermatology—describe a condition that disrupts sleep, impairs academic performance, and can interfere with normal growth and development. Krakowski noted that in his practice, new patients diagnosed with atopic dermatitis routinely require far more time than a standard appointment allows, and that a significant portion of every visit is spent dismantling misinformation circulated on social media. Torres-Zegarra agreed, observing that myth-busting can consume more than half of an appointment and underscoring that education is inseparable from any treatment plan.
In this first segment of a special report from HCPLive, Krakowski and Torres-Zegarra frame the significance of new guidelines that, for the first time, draw on clinical data gathered specifically from pediatric participants, including infants as young as 2 months of age. Torres-Zegarra emphasized that the guidelines also reflect how dramatically the treatment landscape has evolved—from a historical reliance on topical corticosteroids to a robust array of targeted therapies capable of meaningfully altering long-term outcomes. Krakowski added that the availability of pediatric-specific safety and efficacy data signals a broader recognition—by researchers and industry alike—that children deserve tailored therapeutic attention for this chronic, often challenging condition.
